Chip Shortage 2022
Our world depends on silicon, this simple metal derived from the planets most abundant resource is crucial in not only microprocessors but in glass, concrete and car parts.
The COVID-19 pandemic has closed down whole cities and countries on and off for almost two years, a China – US trade war, and now a turbulent conflict in Ukraine. The whole technology manufacturing industry from cars to mobile phones is being affected by this combination of influences that have caused the perfect storm.
The price of silicon metal has quadrupled alongside unprecedented demand caused by Working from Home, manufacturers are prioritising this now expensive and scarce product to be used in higher end, more profitable products.
This means in our business that the cheap laptops, lower end servers and networking equipment that many customers rely on is virtually impossible to source at the prices we were able to less than two years ago and lead times on getting products can be several months in some cases. The world will get through this shortage, but it’s not going away anytime soon – for at least the next two years, we expect constraints to be in the supply chain.
Here at Techienology we are asking all our customers to give us greater notice on purchases and be more flexible on costs, or take up one of our operating lease options to get those higher end, more available products within your budget.
